Why Spring Replacement Shouldn’t Wait

If your garage door spring is broken, we recommend having it changed by a professional right away. Operating a garage door with a broken spring may cause serious damage to your opener or throw the door off track.

Spring not broken, can we just add tension?

If the door feels heavy but the spring is not broken, it may be a sign the spring will break soon. A heavy door may cause damage to the opener.

While it may be an option to add tension to a spring vs replace it, a loss of tension usually means that spring is nearing the end of its life. Often, a spring will fail shortly after an adjustment (sometimes even during the process). Replacing it before it breaks may prevent damage to the automatic opener and save you the headache of being stuck inside or outside your garage when it does break and will not open.

Should I replace the spring myself?

Because the spring system operates under high pressure and torque, we strongly advise you not to try this repair yourself unless you have the professional training and specialized tools. All garage doors will also have a very specific spring or combination of springs it requires so it is easy to make a mistake on which springs to install.

Replace One or Replace Both

If your garage door has two springs, we always recommend replacing both at the same time. The second spring is generally the same age as the first and is likely to fail soon after. Should I replace the door instead?
